Hip Hop Heavy Weights Decline 2019 Grammy Award Performance Invites!
Is it safe to say that the Academy Awards have shown lack of love, interest, support and respect to the black and brown community of artists, actors, musicians, producers, directors, and writers? Would we be justified in deeming that some of the most talented figures within the arts are often over looked, or come close to taking home the prize but often fall short? Is it cool if we question if the Academy Awards are even made for us?
According to #TheHollywoodReporter ; Grammy Producer Ken Elrich revealed earlier today that a wide variant of artists have declined the invite to perform at the 2019 award ceremony. Amongst the list of performers, are Hip Hop A-listers #KendrickLamar , #ChildishGambino and #Drake . Sources have indicated that Elrich shed light on the obvious issue between Hip Hop artists and the lack of recognition they receive from the Academy. “The fact of the matter is, we continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world," Ehrlich went on to say, “When they don’t take home the big prize, the regard of the academy and what the Grammys represent continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad."
It has been stated that Hip Hop legends such as Will Smith, Russell Simmons, Salt & Peppa and Dj Jazzy Jeff decided long ago to take a stance against the Grammys. It all started with #WillSmith and #DjJazzyJeff beginning creating a boycott. Due to the fact that there once was a time point in time where the award presentation for best hip hop rap performances wasn’t televised.
