Twitter responds to Ellen DeGeneres trip to Africa ; accused of “ Poverty Porn”
In efforts of inflicting change; the comedian/ talk show host has established a wild life foundation, to revitalize different areas throughout the world. DeGeneres most recent journey consists of her travel through African countries, within Kenya & Rwanda.
Upon returning to the US, DeGeneres takes to social media to display her time away and all the beautiful and not so appealing sites she has visited.
Alongside wife and life partner Portia de Rossi ; they’re all smiles in numerous bright and beautiful colored photos. Various rainforests, and close range to different animals and wildlife species.
But one single photograph stuck out more than the others. In a more rural area of Africa, DeGeneres shows a dark, bare area, preoccupied by numerous children covered in dirt, no surrounding property or anything. The children are full of life; vibrant and appear to be happy but a large group of people weren’t here for it.
Poverty Porn is defined as : "any type of media, be it written, photographed or filmed, which exploits the poor's condition in order to generate the necessary sympathy for selling newspapers or increasing charitable donations or support
Twitter users expressed their deepest feelings toward the photo; commonly stating their displeasure of the overall setting. “Why didn’t Ellen show a more appealing view of Africa! How come people from America like to portray Africa as a super poor third world country that hasn’t evolved? Why was this specific location used amongst others? Their even referring to the photo as typical colonization porn.
Ellen is usually invited to the cookout but it’s looking a little iffy
