Taraji P Henson Speaks Out On Mental Health Crisis In The Black Community!
Mental health serves as a common overlooked issue within the black community. Realistically because there aren’t enough conversations built around it. We have been taught to find alternative mechanisms to deal with our feelings, emotions and experiences by any means necessary. Basically anything other than actually dealing with our issues head on. Then the domino effect goes into play; passing down hazardous traits through generations leading to a continuous cycle of improperly healing. When does it end?
According to #PeopleMagazine ; #TarajiPHenson has taken a stance to speake out against mental health crisis and it’s direct effect on the black community. Taraji established the Borris Lawrence Henson Foundation last year to honor her late father who suffered from PTSD as a retired veteran. The foundation is built around providing mental health care to the African American community.
“The suicide rate has taken off,” states Taraji. “It amazes me that 5-year-olds are contemplating suicide. That’s a word you shouldn’t even understand at five years old.”
“We don’t talk about mental health, we don’t deal with it. For generations, we’ve been told it’s a weakness, to pray our problems away – and that’s just not gonna cut it.”
Sources have indicated that Taraji spoke directly to the members of the Black Caucus to request their assistance with talking to the black community about mental health and the importance of seeking help.
“I’m only one voice. I need help!”
“If we can teach children about sex education and physical education, why not mental? , that’s where we start attacking this issue: with the children,” states Taraji.
